England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was at The Valley to watch three of the Premiership's outstanding young players and saw Charlton Athletic gain a 2-1 victory over Everton.

The England boss was especially interested in Charlton's Scott Parker who played the whole match, Paul Konchesky who came on as a late substitute and Everton's 17-year-old star Wayne Rooney, who also made a late substitute appearance for the visitors and almost snatched a dramatic injury-time equaliser, with his fierce shot flying over the bar.

Both teams who have won their three previous Premiership matches have European aspirations and the three points and the victory means that Charlton, one of the less fashionable clubs in the top flight, have now been beaten only once in 14 Premiership games.

Charlton took the lead on 19 minutes when Everton keeper Richard Wright could only push away Shaun Bartlett's low drive and the ball ran loose for Bulgarian international Radostin Kishishev to score from close range.

Wright then had to rescue Everton when he twice saved from Claus Jensen and also blocked a Parker shot, but Charlton's keeper Dean Kiely also had to be alert as he saved Tomasz Radzinski's shot with his legs.

Everton had defender Alan Stubbs carried off just before half time with a leg injury.

Everton were the better side in the second half with Brian McBride and David Weir both heading wide and it was no surprise when the visitors equalised with a well struck 20-yard volley from McBride.

But a defensive blunder cost the Toffees dear when Li Tie's mistake allowed Kevin Lisbie in and the striker scored with a low shot to give Charlton a victory that was nearly snatched from them by Rooney's injury-time effort.
