Blues Quick on the Draw

Last updated : 27 August 2002 By Austin Rathe
A capacity crowd watched Everton fight out a two all draw with
Tottenham Hotspur on this the opening match of the 2002/03 season, the club's 100th season in the top flight. The pre-match build up to the match saw the return to Goodison of some old favourites and hero's from yesteryear but the fans were looking to find new hero's on Saturday ...and one has already been found his name is Rooney, Wayne Rooney!

David Moyes gave the Everton-Mad kid his chance and he did not let his manager down. Alongside young Mr Rooney both Richard Wright and Li Tie both made their debuts as did Rodrigo in the second half.
David Moyes decided to play Radzinski,Rooney and Campbell up front and this bold move payed off, maybe we should go through the whole season with this front three, baring injuries of course!

The team started brightly enough and with Li Tie impressive in the
mid-field and Rooney was a live wire up front and this paid dividends as the youngster set up the opening goalfor Mark Pembridge who smashed a great shot past Keller in the Tottenham goal.In doing so he
is the first player to score for Everton in the Premiership and in their 100 season in the top flight also, well done Mark!

Everton held on to the lead until the 63rd minute Etherington hit a
Screamer past the helpless Wright in the Everton goals.(Now I know that David Moyes said Richard should have saved it but I am going to say this was a belter of a shot and Richard would have done well to get a hand to it because of the power and the speed of the shot but I don't pick the Everton team it is just my opinion). But on 74 minutes when Les Ferdinand scored Richard can only say it was one of those things we all have those moments !

Let's get it out of the way and get behind the keeper this week or the gaffer will give him another volley! It was no surprise that Les scored against Everton,I was happy he was only a sub! In days gone by that would have been that,a 2-1 home defeat on the first day what a downer ! but no this Everton team are different these days and they fought back and scored a great goal through to level the match at 2-2 through Radzinski .He ran on to a through ball and cut inside the Spurs defence and fired a low shot passed Keller to give both teams a point each on the opening day of the season.

On Tuesday night the reserves took the road to Sheffield to play Sheff Wed .They won the match 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kevin McLeod on 41 minutes in a poor match, but good result for the men in black !
The team for that match was as follows.

Simonsen, Pilkington, Yobo (Moogan89), Crowder, Osman, Carney, Unsworth, Rodrigo, Symes (Brown 84 )McLeod
Not used Cole,Southern,Beck

Crowd 445

Everton have overtaken Liverpool and Man Utd as the favourite team of
The people of China, according to reports. The fact that Everton have signed two players, Li Tie and Li Weifeng and also are being sponsored by Kejian has had a huge impact on journalists and fans alike in China and they want to follow the fortunes of the Blues because of these moves. It was a great move by the club as it opens up the eyes of the Chinese people to other clubs other than United,Arsenal and the team who play in red in Merseyside! As David
Moyes said this is the people's club, everyone welcome!

Speaking of which, tonight is the night of the International matches
Around the world and one of the players has already had to pull out of an International match..that player is Neil Lennon. Neil does not have an injury as such it's more of a pain in the neck.I cannot beleive in this day and age that a player has to withdraw from captaining his country because a death threat was made to the BBC Northern Ireland Newsroom because Neil plays for Glasgow Celtic and he is a Roman Catholic, what has the world come to ?!!

Is it not Bad enough the evil in the world that takes the lives of two lovely innocent girls, Jessica and Holly, why ? Why would someone do such an evil thing ?? ( I pray for the families and the girls )I cannot understand it! Why then do people hate a player and make his life hell and fear filled because of his colour, creed and what team he plays for? Surely the world in which we live in has not come to be filled with such evils ! Football is a team sport played by 11 men from all over the world no matter where they come from, no man should be made feel different.

Everton have been dubbed the people's club let this be true and let us show the way to others. Let's get the fun back into football and get the families back through the gates again without fear in the kids eyes. Please let us not go back to the dark old ages when people could not go to certain parts of cities because of their creed, let players play lets not scare them away!

Their is enough tears in the world at the moment without all the hate as well!
Please think about the hurt the game and the world has suffered, lets
All bring a smile back on the face of the world...for God's sake!!!!!
