Sean Graham on The Smith decision

Last updated : 13 March 2002 By Austin Rathe
Everton today parted company with their Manager Walter Smith after his
contract being terminated by the club.

After his three and a half years in charge Walter has left the club close to
the edge fighting for its Premiership life, only nine games to go and every one of them will be a Cup Final for us,so its sleeves up for another battle with Fulham on Saturday. Walter came to Everton from Rangers in July 1998 via a swift visit to Sheffield Wednesday and straight away he could see this was a club in trouble.!

In November 1998 he threatened to quit the club following the sale of Duncan
Ferguson behind his back,to Newcastle. Then in December Peter Johnson resigned and it was then thought that everything in the garden would be rosey, especially when lifelong Evertonian,Bill Kenwright are installed as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the club.

It is strange that Bill Kenwright officially completed the takeover of the
club in March 2000,almost two years to the day and he finds the club again fighting in the bottom half of the league in the struggle to again stay in the Premiership,I don't think for a minute that Bill is to blame for the club's current state,it was like that when he came!

He feels the pain as much as we all do !

The club must Think long and hard before their next appointment, making sure
it's the right one ! But what everyone must remember is that money must be made available to the new manager and we must all get behind whoever gets the job from day one. The names have been thrown about are the usual
suspects,Jones,Megson,Radcliffe,Moyes and Graham (I d be happy to take the job Bill ! ) but I will wait untill the club makes an official statement, but if I do hear anything you can be sure I will tell you first,on our Everton webpage.

Having listened to all on TV and read the Newspapers,I am surprised at some
of the opinions by some of our ex-players especially Big Nev,don't get me wrong,as Chrissie Hinds used to say,the Big man was a Big hero of mine, but I would have to disagree with him saying ,At the end of the day I sometimes think it would be better if Everton were to go down ! I know that we are all in a state of shock at the way Everton have performed this season,we where top once, and one win in your last 13 games is not good enough,so something had to give,so now Walter has gone.We must thank him for trying to steer the ship to safety over the toubled waters that we have faced this season, and indeed the past few seasons too,but it is time for him to move on as it is time for the club to move on too ,to a new man and maybe another Scot, Davie Moyes,if it is good luck to you Davie, you may need it !!!

One footnote, my mate Nick ( Liverpool fan ) ,told me the other day that
Everton are changing their kit deal from One to One to Gone To One !
I 'll be wearing my Barcelona top tonight big man !!!!

My last message to the board is remember ,Nothing but the Best is good
enough, these Goodison fans deserve it ..!
