AEK Athens

The AEK stands for Athletic Union of Constantinople - thought it was Istanbul not Constantinople - and although that should be AUC, in Greek it's Athlitiki Enosis Konstantinoupoleos, so it's AEK Athens.

The club was founded on 13th April 1924 by a group of Turkish refugees - hence the Constantinople reference in the name - so they must get some stick from opposing Greek teams for being Turkish!

They've won the Greek title 11 times, the first win coming in 1939 - a twat of a year to win the league, we can vouch for that - and the last win coming in 1994.

They've won the Greek Cup 13 times, most recently in 2002 and the Greek League Cup just once in 1990.

They've not had too much success in Euorpe as their best run came in 1977 when the were beaten 5-1 on aggregate in the semi final by the eventual winners Juventus.

They play in yellow and black - for some reason I always thought they wore red and white stripes - and their home games are played at the 71,000 capacity Olympic Stadium in Athens.

They are managed by Yogoslav Dusan Bejovic and  don't have any instantly recognisible names in their squad, apart from a Brazilian midfielder called Leonardo, but it's not that Leonardo!

Rivaldo ended his career there too....

Last season they finished second in the Greek Super League play offs and thereby qualified for this season's Europa League.

This will be our first meeting with AEK Athens but we've faced their city rivals, Panathinaikos, back in 1971.

That was in the European Cup when Harry Catterick's championship winning side were knocked out by the Greeks on the away goals rule.

After a 0-0 draw in Athens, Everton were held to a 1-1 draw in the quarter-final second-leg and Panathinaikos went on to be defeated in the final by Ajax.

The only other Greek team we've faced was Larissa in the 2008 UEFA Cup.

We beat them 3-1 at Goodison with goals coming from Tim Cahill, Leon Osman and Victor Anichebe.

The pick of the bunch was this screamer from Leon Osman!
