Some viewers complained after Rooney appeared chewing gum and with a loosened tie when recieveing his award for young sports personallity of the year.

However, a spokseperson for the BBC said "We did get some complaints but no-one connected with the show was the least bit concerned. Everyone thought he was a lovely lad."

Everton PR Man Ian Ross said "Wayne is an innocent lad who was only 17 a few weeks ago. Appearing on the show must have been frightening. At least he wore a collar and tie, unlike some guests including Sir Steven Redgrave and Sam Torrance."

Good point Ian. The show featured numerous male guests dressed in casual attire, and host Gary Lineker made a number of cheap jokes at the expense of Sven Eriksson, referring to his affair with Urika Jonson, and it's a 17 year old footballer who takes the flak. Typical.
