The move comes after Abel Xavier completed his switch to Liverpool, and the Sweedish international is probably being lined up to replace Thomas Gravesen when he leaves, probably within a month or so.

The £3m fee represents a good buy for Everton, the 22 year old has played 15 times for his country. most recently in the 1-1 draw against England last November.

Walter Smith told Everton's official site “He is a 22-year-old defensive midfield player and an established international He has 17 caps for Sweden, who are playing very well and have qualified for the World Cup, and he has been solid and done well for them."

"We are hopeful that it will progress because midfield is an area where we have been short of players. Negotiations are in progress and we hope to conclude a deal within 24 hours.”

Linderoth's signing is subject to a medical that will take place today.
