FA Cup third round

We play the Cumbrians at home on the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd January.

The Blues have never been beaten by Carlisle in the cup, having faced them three times.

The first encounter was in 1929/30 when two goals from Ted Critchley and two from William Ralph Dean earned the Blues a 4-2 win at Brunton Park in the FA Cup third round.

Unfortunately, Everton were relegated for the first time in their history that season!

The next time the two teams met was in the 1967/68 season when goals from Jimmy Husband and Joe Royle were enough to book Everton a place in the FA Cup fifth round.

The hard luck story that season was that the Blues were beaten 0-1 by West Brom in the FA Cup final thanks to a single Jeff Astle goal.

But it's the two defeats during the 1974/75 season that will live longest in the memory of Evertonians.

Everton finished the '74/75 season in 4th place, behind Derby County, Liverpool and Ipswich Town, but only three points separated the top four teams.

In the days when it was still only two points for a win, the Blues had taken three points from eventual winners Derby County, two points from runners up Liverpool and one point from Ipswich.

Everton were beaten 2-3 at home by Sheffield United in the penultimate game of the season so even a result at Chelsea, who were relegated, wouldn't've been enough to bring the title back to Goodison.

But it was the two defeats to Carlisle, who finished bottom of the league with just 29 points, that will be go down as the results that lost us the title.

The first shock result came on 21 December 1974 as high flying Everton lost 2-3 to the Cumbrians.

But the return fixture at Brunton Park in March 1975 was to provide an even bigger shock as the Blues, who were still title favourites at this point, suffered a 0-3 defeat!

Billy Bingham's Everton side got one back on the Cumbrians the following season, beating them 2-0 in round three of the League Cup but nothing was going to make up for the two defeats in 1974/75.
