But it's not the hapless striker that has suffered a freak injury this time…it's the surgeon, as Dr Richard Steadman has broken his arm!
So Vaughan has been flown back from Colorado without undergoing any treatment and the club are now assessing what other options are open to the player.
And there are obviously none as Dr Steadman is clearly the only knee surgeon on the planet…either that or everyone with a dodgy cruciate goes over to Colorado for a right good…er…knees up!
The story gets even stranger though as it appears that the club knew about Dr Steadman's injury!
In a bizarre statement, David Moyes said of the latest set back:
"Unfortunately Dr Steadman has had a complication. We knew he had a broken arm but it's turned out to be quite serious and we didn't know that before James had left."
Now would anyone in their right mind really expect to be treated by a surgeon with a broken arm? Even if it was broken 'just a little bit' as the club seem to be saying?!
But at least it clears up any doubt as to why every footballer with a plastered patella flies over to Colorado to see Dr Steadman…clubs think he's that good he can operate with one hand tied behind his back!
