Ground share talks continue

Everton, Liverpool, the North West Development Agency (NWDA) and local authority representatives have held prliminary talks aimed at getting the two clubs to agree to share a ground.

The crux of the issue is the fact that the council don't want two very big, expensive and congestion-causeing stadiums to be built when one would do, so are offering a very large (about £20m according to some reports) financial carrot to persuade the two clubs to share Liverpool's proposed Stanley Park stadium.

"The Northwest Development Agency, together with Liverpool City Council, have asked Liverpool Football Club and Everton Football Club to discuss the economic development and regeneration benefits of building a new, world-class football stadium in Liverpool.

"The Agency are supportive of Liverpool Football Club's plans to build a new stadium and are keen to ensure that the development brings the greatest possible benefit for the city and the wider north west. " Said Bryan Gray from NWDA.

Ironically, the major stumbling block may not be the fans, certainly not ours anyway. If you offered most Evertonians a nice new 60,000 stadium for not a lot, i reckon they would take it (i know i would!). The problem is that this is Liverpool's 'baby', and they don't want Everton getting a slice of their PR pie.

It's an interesting one, my guess is that the financial insentives will persuade both clubs to at least entertain the possibility, and then it's down to the fans.
