Jonny Two Jags

The crocked centre-half rounded off an oustanding season for the Blues by picking up the awards at St George's Hall last night.

The 2008/09 campiagn has seen Jagielka become an ever-present at the heart of the Everton defence, get his first call-up for England and he banished the memories of Fiorentina by smashing home Everton's winning penalty in the FA Cup semi-final shoot-out with Manchester United.

But his season was cruelly cut short during the 1-2 defeat to Man City last month short when he sustained a freak knee injury that will keep him out until October.

But there's more good news for Jagielka as the club are to open negotiations to extend his current contract and offer him a better deal in recognition of his outstanding form over the last 18 months.

I don't think many fans, nor the player himself, could've envisaged things turning out this week given the shakey start to his Everton career.

After signing from Sheffield United in the summer of 2007 Jagielka struggled to find form and was deployed with little success in the central midfield holding role.

But a switch back to his preferred role at centre-half saw the 26-year-old recapture the form that convinced David Moyes to splash out £4,000,000 to take him from Bramall Lane to Goodison.

And that is looking like it's been £4,000,000 very well spent!
