With his first match back taking place at Manchester United and his first home game seeing Everton visit Anfield, Dalglish could not have had a tougher start, and the midweek defeat at Blackpool has made matters worse.
Dalglish's last three matches of his previous spell as Liverpool manager all came against Everton - now he must rally his troops to prevent the Toffees from recording their first victory at Anfield this century and their first double over the Reds since 1984/85.
Liverpool's cause is made harder by the absence of their suspended captain Steven Gerrard, although Fernando Torres's midweek goal will have provided a glimmer of hope.
Everton are also without their talisman and top scorer, Tim Cahill, who has been the Toffees' most successful derby player in the post-war era but who is currently on international duty with Australia. With the Blues struggling for league goals, he will be sorely missed, although manager David Moyes will hope the five-goal haul at Scunthorpe in the FA Cup is a sign his strikers are rediscovering their form.
If that is the case, Moyes could be on for something he has failed to achieve in eight previous attempts - a victory at Anfield - a result which would further derail the Dalglish dream.
