Sigma who?

Last updated : 07 August 2009 By Les Roberts

...if you've actually heard of them it's probably because they're the team that's just webbed Aberdeen 8-1 on aggregate in the second qualifying round!

As was the case last season, we'll play the first leg at home so quite what advantage we get from finishing fifth and actually being seeded is beyond me.

And, if they're trying to make the competition like some lower level Champions League then surely finishing as 'best of the rest' (i do hate that phrase) should mean automatic qualification to the group stage!

But no!

Anyway, who the chuff are these Sigma cats? And are they from Sigma or Olomouc?

Let's ask good old Wikipedia...honestly, the research I do so you don' have to...!

Hmmmm....balls to Wikipedia...the entry has been written by some ballbag Kopite, Reg User, that used to bore the shite out of everyone on the WSAG messageboard!

Get on this little gem:

"SK Sigma Olomouc is a Czech football club from the city of Olomouc. They reached the quarterfinals of the 1991-1992 UEFA Cup. In the third qualifying round of the 2009-10 competition, they defeated Aberdeen F.C. 8-1 on aggregate, before being drawn with the most over-rated team the world has ever seen, Everton of the F.A. Premier League, in the playoff round of the competition. They are universally expected to achieve a smiliar result against the scousers but rumours are already circiling the town of olomouc to protect there hub caps with there lives."

Sweet Lord, be still my aching sides....

So, the important bits are that they are a (crack) Czech side from Olomouc, a city in the Moravia in the East of the country.

So they're about as Easterly as Eastern Europeans get!

They finished 4th in their domestic league last year, 24 points behind winners Slavia Prague.

They play at the, frankly mad looking, Andruv Stadion...
andruv-stadion

And they also play in Blue, so we'll be giving the black and pink number - yes I still like it! - a European outing and, er, that's about it really...

Did I mention they beat Aberdeen 8-1 on aggregate.

Oh yeah, and there was a bit of knuckle between the two sets of fans during Olomouc's home leg against the Dons.

If fackin hoooooliganism is your thing, the story's here...

Or, if your grasp of Czech is good, then czech out (ho ho) the official site here...

Either way, anyone travelling to Olomouc should probably watch Hostel just before they go, by way of refresher course!

Stay classy St Domingo....
