The magic number

Tim Cahill, Thomas Gravesen and James Vaughan have all started taking part in full training sessions and are hoping to be back in the squad over the next month or so.

Tim Cahill sounds like he is closest to resuming first team action as he is taking part in all aspects of training.

The Australian international broke his foot for the second time in nine months during the pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen.

He is due to see the consultant again this week and we should have a clearer idea of when he'll be back in contention.

Thomas Gravesen sustained a knee injury whilst playing for Denmark in the last lot of Euro 2008 qualifiers and, whilst the initial indications were that he'd be out for a couple of weeks, has been missing from the squad for a month now.

He has started doing some running, kicking and, presumably, chest thumping and the vague progress report is that he'll be back 'sooner rather than later'.

And James Vaughan, who you just know is one of those players that is destined to be described the papers as being 'dogged by injury' (or maybe even 'plagued') has also started playing a bit of football, which is always dead handy for a footballer.

Vaughan suffered what must surely have been the worst shoulder dislocation ever against Preston as it has kept him out for about three months now!

Mel Gibson used to just pop his out and back in again in Lethal Weapon for God's sake!
