Yakubu's Achillies heel

Last updated : 25 August 2009 By Les Roberts
Yakubu has been out since last November when he ruptured his Achillies tendon during the 1-0 win at Tottenham.

And it was the injury that was to set the tone for Everton's season as Yakubu's was the first of three long-term lay offs sustained with no other player within kicking distance!

The Everton striker jumped for a ball, landed awkwardly and that was it for the season, in much the same way that Mikel Arteta did a few months later at Newcastle.

Phil Jagielka, on the other hand was clearly picked off by a sniper in the away end when he did his knee in against Man City....Man City?...now there's a conspiracy theory!

And, we might as well mention our other long term sick note, Victor Anichebe, well he was just assaulted by some pock-faced gobshite!

Back to Yakubu and he is due to figure in some capacity tonight alongside Iain Turner, Dan Gosling and Jose Baxter.

New boy Shkodran Mustafi is also set to play and will join the outrageously-named Moses Barnett in defence.

Those two American lads are also going to be there presumably selling hot dogs, eating grits and fulfilling any number of American cliches.

The game kicks off at 7pm tonight at the Stobart Stadium in Widnes.

And, just in case you'd forgotten how good the Yak can be, just watch this clip  (from about 3 mins 18 seconds) over and over and over....
