Benni's on the ball

Admittedly, we've been after him for what seems like forever and, if we do sign him, you can't help feel that it's about four years too late.

The former South African international - he retired in 2004 - is thought to be unhappy at Blackburn under Sam Allardyce, who wouldn't be, and is looking to move for regular first team football.

Though Everton will want to take the striker on loan, it's thought that Blackburn will want to sell the player for a fee of around £2.5 million.

So there's a major spanner in the works!

And even though he's now 32 he's always been a prolific striker - more prolific than the Portsmouth porn-star we're being linked with - and has scored 52 goals in 136 games at Blackburn.

His best spell was at Porto where he netted 53 goals in 106 games and won the Champions League.

He's also South Africa's all-time leading goalscorer having come out of retirement in 2004 to score in a 3-0 win over Paraguay to take the national team's scoring record from Shaun Bartlett.

Yes, that hot-shot that used to play for Charlton.

Anyway, should we sign McCarthy he will, despite his age (Christ! 32 isn't that old you know!) add some much needed experience and quality a strike force that has, once again, been decimated thanks to injury (Saha and Anichebe), the sodding African Nations Cup of African Nations in Africa (Yakubu) and Jo being shit and then going missing!
