Hearts two Heart

It's believed that the Edinburgh club are on their uppers and are looking to offload some of their higher wage earners.

But, as usual, when there's talk of Everton 'stepping up' their interest it only means that they're planning to call the other club's chief executive and ask them to give them their players for nothing…you can almost hear the desperation in Robert Elstone's voice as he can feel his opposite number putting the phone back towards the receiver "…but it's only til the end of the season so your not exactly giving them to us! Hello? Hello?!"

The thinking behind this one is that Everton could land the two players on short-term loan deals simply because Hearts need to cut the wage bill.

The Jambos shelled out £12.49 million on wages last term against a turnover of £10.3 million, figures that would make even Everton's accountants gasp!

The Blues have, apparently, been on the trail of these players for some time, probably in the same way as Marouane Fellaini was our number one summer target, that Moutinho stuff was all a smokescreen, and Everton scouts were at
Fir Park on Wednesday to watch the duo as Hearts went down 0-1 to Motherwell.

Driver is a 21-year-old 'forward' who scored on his debut for Hearts in their 4-1 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle on the opening day of the 2006/07 season.

Since then though, he has added just ten more goals to that tally in a further 55 appearances, his last coming against Celtic during last month's 1-1 draw at Parkhead.

And if his goalscoring tally doesn't look too impressive that's probably because he's not actually a striker as reports suggest.

Hearts' official website describes driver as "A young left winger who sets up the chances with his pace and crossing skills." It goes on "Andy is also a regular scorer and hits a mean free kick."

So it looks like Moyes is really taking this
4-6-0 formation seriously!

But he would be another attack minded player on the books so it'd be a step in the right direction!

The need to sign Cristophe Berra is slightly less clear though as he is a centre half and currently the captain of Hearts.

The
Edinburgh born defender is in his sixth season as a first team player, despite being just 23-years-old, and it is thought that the Tynecastle club will not listen to offers less than £10 million and they have already turned down an offer of £2.5 million from Fulham.

And I can't really see the club finding that sort of money for a defender when we're pretty well covered at the back.

In other transfer news,
19 year-old Icelandic midfielder Aron Gunnarsson has revealed that Everton, Stoke City and Celtic have made enquiries as to his availability but doesn't appear to be looking at leaving Coventry City in the near future.

Which is the tranfer rumour equivalent of a 'hundreds die in Bangladesh flash floods' story in the Daily Mail….
