Lescott's leaving

Last updated : 04 August 2009 By Les Roberts

The Everton defender has officially stated his desire to leave Goodison for the lure of the filfthy lucre on offer at Eastlands.

David Moyes has remained bullish in his assertion that Lescott will not be leaving Everton but he¹s got to be kidding himself if he thinks the 26-year-old won¹t be a Manchester City player in the near future.

The headline on the Liverpool Echo website reads “Everton FC Manager David Moyes tells Joleon Lescott - you're going nowhere”.

I¹m still trying to work out whether he means that Lescott¹s going nowhere as in ‘not leaving Everton’ or he’s going nowhere if he signs for those balls up merchants down the East Lancs.

If any club can mess up an opportunity like this one then it’s Manchester City, a club with a couple of fingers always hovering over the self destruct button.

And, given their conduct in all of this – they’ve even started sniffing around Rasmus Elm as a way of flexing their financial muscles – it’s hard to see how anyone wouldn’t want it all to blow up in their face!

Moyes’ position is that he does not want to lose a player of Lescott’s quality, especially from such a small, and still injury hit, squad.

But it’s difficult to see how Lescott can stay now as you generally burn you bridges with a club when you ask to leave.

The defender is on a lucrative contract until 2013 so it’s not even as though his asking for a move will get him improved terms at Everton.

And the Blues are in no position to offer the sort of money that Manchester City can.

It's interesting too that, despite stating that he wants to leave, Lescott is yet to hand in an official transfer request...that'd balls up the 'loyalty bonus' wouldn't it?!

Lescott will miss tonight¹s friendly at Blackpool due to his, ahem, hip injury - and that wasn¹t a wink, I think I have grapefruit pulp in my eye - but is expected to figure in the clash with Malaga on Friday.

But it appears that the writing is on the wall for Lescott the Everton player now and I just hope that the club don’t wait until the last day of the transfer window to complete a deal, leaving us with much needed money that we can’t use to strengthen the squad.

And the news just in is that Everton have confirmed that they in talks with Arsenal about bringing Phillip Senderos to Goodison.

But that would have nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that Lescott’s leaving...
