Our South African star currently has just 18 months left on his current deal but he insists that he would be happy for the club to step in and tie him up on a longer contract.

The 27-year-old said: "I am a proud Everton player at present and would welcome it if the club moved to secure my long term future, but that kind of thing is out of my hands."

He, more worryingly, added: "I have played in a number of the best leagues in the world and it has always been my ambition to test myself in La Liga. For a player of my type, La Liga will always be an attraction and to play in the Champions League again would be a real thrill."

Do you think he actually said 'a real thrill'? Who actually speaks like that?!

Anyway, this last comment has led to much speculation that he's got his bags packed and he's ready to up sticks to Madrid and it shows just how hard these hacks have to think to get a story together.

Pienaar's said he'd love to play in Spain, he'd love to play in the Champions League, he's not going to get a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid, he's no Thomas Gravesen, so it's either Seville or Atletico...heads says it's Atletico are after him.

And, failing that, there's always Gareth Barry's preferred destination of Man City as Pienaar is another Everton player, along with Joleon Lescott and Mikel Arteta, that has now been linked with a move to Eastlands.

Really, why don't City just bung us a load of cash and take all our players, or pull an unprecendented 'squad swap' or something?

More news on who is going to be 'testing Everton's resolve' as and when it's tested folks.
