There goes the rumour mill...

And where were all the juicy rumours given that we had £24 million burning a hole in our metaphorical arse pocket?

Not even one mention of Moutinho... or M'Bia...maybe they're just soooo last summer!

Anyway, transfer deadline day was a bit of a damp squib as all of Everton's transfer activity revolved around the 'will-he-won't-he' antics of Johnny Hetinga.

He obviously eventually did and, on the balance of things, the squad is looking immeasurably better, even from the opening day of the season.

The Ever Banega deal never materialised but I don't think anyone will lose too much sleep over that one...until we play Valencia in the Europa League quarters and he nets the winner!

The transfer run down in full goes like this....

IN:

Jo (Man City, loan)
Anton Peterlin (Ventura County, undisc)
Sylvain Distin (Portsmouth, £5.3m)
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (Lokomotiv Moscow, £10m)
John Heitinga (Atletico Madrid, £6m)
Cody Arnoux (Carolina Dynamo, undisc)
Shkrodan Mustafi (Hamburg, FIFA compensation)
Seamus Coleman (Sligo Rovers, undisc)

OUT:

Joleon Lescott (Man City, £24m)
Lars Jacobsen (Blackburn, contract expired)
Nuno Valente (released)
Andy van der Meyde (released)
Segundo Castillo (end of loan)

In short, we've released players that we barely used last season and replaced them with ones that we'll probably barely use this season.

Then we've added some much needed quality to the squad in retaining Jo's services and signing Distin, Bilyaletdinov and Heitinga, all paid for by the sale of Lescott, with change to spare, doesn't seem so bad now does it?!

The signing of the two American lads is an interesting one as it strikes me that they could be strategic signings to get the Everton name spread throughout the USA.

It's unlikely that they'll ever get a game for Everton and their signings do have a touch of the Li Tie and Li Wei Feng about them but, seriously, to get Everton talked about from New York to Nevada we'll have to do better than sign a couple of players from the US equivalent of the Birkenhead Sunday league!

Though i suppose Cody Arnoux needs a new challenge after his Dr Shepard character got killed off in Gray's Anatomy...

And, just as an aside and an excuse to have a little dig at that lot over there, yes them, why, on Sky Sports news were they at pains to point out that, despite being the second biggest spenders of the transfer window, the shite clawed back £30 million of the £37.5 million they spent via the sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrird?

They've even got the media making the 'net spend' case for them these days!
