Everton v Luton Town

They are currently fifth in the Championship after picking up 11 points from the last 18.

And they go into this game on the back of leathering Leeds 5-1 on Saturday…stop sniggering at the back!

But, in reality, they still shouldn't pose any problems for whatever team David Moyes decides to put out tonight.

According to the official site, a virus has swept through Bellefield – have you noticed that whenever a virus is mentioned, it always sweeps through the training ground? – and Simon Davies, Tim Howard, Tim Cahill and James Beattie are all doubtful for tonight's game.

Hatters' boss, and former Everton player, Mike Newell, also commented on Radio Merseyside last night that a bug has affected his squad and, whilst he'll still pick the best team available to him, there will probably be changes to the team that gubbed Leeds on Saturday.

Boss kit!

So, to avoid catching any lurgee that may be floating about, all traveling to the match tonight are being advised to wear those little white surgical mask things so beloved of Chinese tourists and builders trying to look all professional so they can put another 30 quid an hour onto their labour costs!

As far as team news goes, Iain Turner could well be handed a start and Victor Anichebe may also get the nod after coming on, and doing well, on Saturday.

The men to watch out for as far as Luton are concerned are Rowan Vine, who has netted eight goals so far this season and, Trinidad and Tobago midfielder, Carlos Edwards, who has scored five.

Historically, we have done well against Luton at home, winning 15, losing five and drawing three of our 23 meetings at Goodison.

The last time we played them was in 1991/92 season when a 19th minute Brian Stein goal cancelled out Mo Johnston's seventh minute strike to earn a point for the relegation bound Hatters.

The last time we played them in the cup was during round three of the 1989-90 League Cup, then in it's guise as the Littlewoods Cup.

The Blues cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win thanks to two goals from Mike Newell and one from Pat Nevin.

My overriding memory of Luton is of that team that always seemed to stitch us up on that horrible plastic pitch in the mid-eighties.

And Steve Foster's minty headband!

But we're on grass tonight, there'll be no dodgy headwear and the Blues should beat them reasonably comfortably.

But then that should have been the case against Peterborough!

Allez les Blues!
