Ref Watch...Andre Marriner

I could only think of three; Agassi, the Giant and 3000 (him out of
Outkast).

However, a Google search also threw up Andre, an Armenian pop star who
won the Best Male Singer in the Armenian Music Awards in 2004 and 2005.

It's doubtful that any of these Andres will be at Goodison on Saturday,
but one that will be is Premiership referee Andre Marriner.

He has actually refereed three Everton games in the last three seasons
and, whilst his name may not ring too many bells, you'll probably
remember him for a red card he issued.

He refereed the League Cup round three match with Preston in 2004/05
season and sent off Lee Carsley midway through the second half for
cracking a Preston player.
Yes Lee, it's a red one!

For the record, we won that game 2-0 but then got leathered 1-3 in the
next round by a load of Arsenal's kids!

Mr Marriner took charge of a further two Everton games last season, one
of which was the 1-0 win at Portsmouth when he booked Ferrari and
Kilbane.

The other Everton match he refereed was actually last season's
corresponding fixture against Man City.

This entirely forgettable match against City (they invariably are for
one reason or another) was won by a mad goal from David Weir…more of
that in the match preview.

So that's three wins in three when Mr Marriner has been in charge, not a
bad record at all.

He has also refereed three Man City matches in the last three seasons
and has booked four players and sent off one.

The red card was shown to Stephen Jordan in last year's Goodison meeting
and Mr Marriner also booked Joey Barton and Richard Dunne in that match.

And that was the only match out of the last three that Man City have
lost.

The other two City matches that Mr Marriner has refereed have ended in
wins as he took charge of their 2-1 win over Portsmouth and their 3-1
win over Palace in 2004/05 when he, again, booked Barton and Dunne.

So it looks like this one will be a win for the Blues and all that City
will leave Goodison with is a booking apiece for Barton and Dunne.

Job's a good ‘un!
