Ref watch...Mark Halsey

Last updated : 24 August 2006 By Les Roberts

There's a suggestion that he could be a bit of a homer as he booked three Boro players and one Reading player in that match.

But there could have been a bit of desperation creeping into Boro as all of the bookings came after they had been pegged back by the Royals. So I guess he should be given the benfit of the doubt really.

But how has he been when refereeing Everton and Tottenham over the past few seasons?

He has taken charge of five Everton matches since the 2004/05 season and booked just three players.

He refereed the 0-0 draw with Blackburn in 2004/05 and booked Hibbert and Carsley and then, last season, he issued just one caution in four games.

Again, the yellow card came at Ewood Park, but this time it was shown to Arteta as we beat Blackburn 2-0.

There were subsequently no Everton cautions during the 0-2 defeat at Man City, the 2-2 draw with Sunderland nor during the 0-0 draw with Birmingham.

He has refereed three Tottenham matches over the same period and has booked just two players.

There were no cautions as Spurs drew 0-0 at Anfield in 2004/05 but Atouba was cautioned by Mr Halsey when Tottenham drew 1-1 at West Brom in round four of the 2005 FA Cup.

Last season, he took charge of Tottenham's 1-2 defeat to Man United and booked Stalteri.

So, with that in mind, and the fact that he issued fewer cautions per game than all but two other referees last season, Saturday shouldn't see us add too many more cards to our tally of five yellows for the season so far.
