Ref Watch...Phil Dowd

The Staffordshire official is statistically the Premiership's second strictest referee as he has issued 80 yellow cards and four reds during his 20 appointments this season. This gives him an average of 4.20 cards per game, a ratio that is just short of Mike Riley's 4.21 cards per game.
He has refereed eight Everton matches over the last three season's and booked 14 players. His most recent Everton match was this season's gubbing down at Stamford Bridge when Nuno Valente, Tim Cahill and Lee Carsley were all booked as the Blues crashed out of the FA Cup. But that game will probably be best remembered for Richard Wright doing his ankle in on a sign warning him that if he warmed up in the goal mouth he'd probably do his ankle in…or something like that!
He's refereed three Liverpool games this season and booked three of their players and sent off one. Sissoko was shown the red card by Mr Dowd during Liverpool's 2-0 win at Sunderland in a match that also saw Finnan pick up a booking. Sissoko was then booked by Mr Dwod during Liverpool's 2-1 FA Cup win at Portsmouth and the Staffordshire official cautioned Raven when Liverpool were memorably beaten 2-1 at Palace in the Carling Cup.
The most memorable Everton match Mr Dowd has refereed was probably last season's 1-0 win over Man United. Everything seemed to go right on the night that the Blues effectively secured fourth spot. We won through a headed goal by Big Dunc, Rooney was largely anonymous and Gary Neville got sent off, as did Paul Scholes. A 1-0 win and two red cards for Liverpool on Saturday would be the perfect start to an afternoon in the ale house!
