Ref watch...Phil Dowd

Last updated : 14 September 2006 By Les Roberts
Phil Dowd will probably be best remembered for last season's Anfield derby
when we thought he'd handed us the game by sending off Steven "I was a
blue at seven years of age" Gerrard after about 15 minutes.

But the game escaped him, not to mention us, from that moment on and he
ended up booking seven of our players and two of theirs.

And, on 74 minutes, he then showed ‘ the enigma', Andy van der Meyde,
the most ridiculous of red cards for an alleged elbow on Alonso.

Never touched him ref!

Maybe he should have attempted a Tim Cahill style DDT instead…

Anyway, Mr Dowd's record when refereeing the Blues isn't great as far as
cautions go.

He has taken charge of five Everton matches since 2004/05 and issued 17
yellow cards and one red card.

That's an average of 3.4 cards per game so expect him to add to Everton's tally of six yellow cards.

And if Wigan go down to ten men then there's a good chance that we could
be adding to Kilbane's red card at Tottenham the other week!

A sight we may see on Saturday...obviously minus vand der Meyde like!

His record in Wigan matches reads: refereed four, booked nine and sent
off one.

The red card was shown to McCulloch as the Latics beat Newcastle 1-0 at
home last season.

The other bad news, as far as discipline is concerned, is that Mr Dowd
finished last season as the Premiership's strictest referee with 96
yellow cards and seven red cards shown over the course of his 23 top
flight appointments.

But, it looks as though he may have mellowed over the summer as his
ratio of 1.5 cards per game is the lowest in the Premiership.

But he hasn't refereed an Everton match yet…
