Ref Watch...Rob Styles

Last updated : 25 February 2008 By Les Roberts

He's one of those referees that you've definitely heard of, will probably recognize, but you are not quite sure why.

It could be because he sent off Lee Carsley at Stamford Bridge the other year after he made an, at worst bookable, challenge on Didier Drogba just after half time in that match.

Everton were well in with a shout of getting something up until that point but we, somewhat inevitably, got webbed 3-0 in the end.

Or his name may be ringing some bells after he hit the headlines for having the audacity to wrongly award Chelsea a penalty at Anfield earlier this season.

You'll remember that Keith Hackett (the head of referees) totally buckled when Rafael 'it's Rafa again' Benitez went mental after Mr Styles, admittedly wrongly, awarded Chelsea a penalty that earned them a point at Anfield.

The official was forced to make a grovelling apology to seemingly everyone at Anfield after making a simple error of judgement that you see at matches every week.

Incidentally, does anyone know what's going on with the whole Mark Clattenburg thing?

Never did get an apology for that shambles did we?!

Anyway, Rob Styles is the fifth strictest Premier League referee as his 62 yellow cards and six red cards in 19 games give him an average of 3.58 cards per game.

He has refereed just two Everton games this season and the Blues have won them both quite comfortably.

He took charge of the 2-0 Boxing Day win over Bolton when goals from Phil Neville and Tim Cahill saw the Blues take all three points with no bookings in that game.

Mr Styles also officiated in the 3-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday in September.

This was another routine victory for Everton, seeing quite a few of those this season, and two goals from McFadden and one from Yakubu saw the Blues kick off their run to the semis.

Hibberts and Jagielka were both booked in that game.

Mr Styles has refereed just one Man City game this season and that was the mind-numbingly dull 0-0 draw at West Ham in round three of this season's FA Cup.

About the only thing of note in that match was that Corluka and Hamann were both booked for City.
