Ref Watch...Steve Bennett

Which is not a bad thing as, in the three games he took charge of that
season, he booked seven Everton players and sent off one.

Everyone will remember the red card as it was shown to Tim Cahill after
he scored, what turned out to be the winner, at Man City.

Upon scoring, our Antipodean marksman ran to the halfway line and lifted
his shirt over his head and was promptly shown his second yellow card of
the game.
Dunno who the cat with the Lucozade bottle is...or what he's doing on the picth!

But the Blues hung on to win 1-0 and it set us well on the way to
finishing fourth that year. We were actually in fifth spot on 10 points
at that stage of the season.

Mr Bennett also booked Lee Carsley and Alessandro Pistone in that match.

Pistone was again booked by Mr Bennett, along with Mikel Arteta and
James McFadden, as Everton went down 0-2 at Fulham later that season.

He was also the referee in that memorable 1-0 victory over Liverpool
when Carsley slotted from distance and the team pile-on ensued.

Hibbert and Ferguson were booked in that game.

He's seen a lot more of Newcastle over the last few seasons as he's
taken charge of nine of their matches since 2004/05.

In that time he's booked 13 of their players and sent off one as Elliott
was dismissed when Chelsea knocked Newcastle out of last season's FA
Cup.

Mr Bennett has taken charge of three games this season and has issued
eight yellows and one red card.

The good news for both teams is that his average of 3 cards per game is
below average for a Premiership referee this season.

But since when has that mattered…

nb. Steve Bennett is scheduled to be the referee at the time of writing
but there's a good chance this could change by the weekend and we'll end
up with Mike Riley or someone!
