Arsenal have off-loaded defender Havard Nordtveit to German side Borussia Monchengladbach.

Nordtveit, 20, spent part of last season on loan from the Gunners at Nuremberg, and is joining on a 2½-year contract with a transfer fee in the region of £800,000.

Monchengladbach have also snapped up Austrian defender Martin Stranzl from Spartak Moscow.

Stranzl has also signed a 2½-year deal, on an undisclosed fee, and had been linked with a move to the Premier League, with West Ham, Fulham and Everton all said to be interested in the 30-year-old stopper.

Moenchengladbach are bottom of the Bundesliga with 10 points with the division's worst defensive record.
